These processes have eliminated 10,119 urban transportation routes, and if route adjustments are added outside of this process, approximately 11,000 urban routes have been eliminated this year. A collective agreement makes a significant contribution to protecting workers from unfair treatment. This gives us a say in the workplace, allows us to improve our working conditions and provides us with a fair way to address and resolve problems in the workplace. National and local union member organizations are autonomous organizations that rely on the national union to defend their interests in contract negotiations and complaints at the national level. The union negotiates a national collective agreement and fights for the interests of our members on Capitol Hill. The APWU also has many chapters on retirees and help, allowing former postal employees and postal families to remain active in union affairs. As a result, postal workers were chronically underpaid. In March 1970, full-time employees earned about $6,200 to begin with, and workers with 21 years of service earned an average of only 8,440 $US – barely enough to get by at that time. The APWU was created on 1 July 1971 as a result of a merger of five postal unions.
